Effects of Stress on Seniors and Elderly

It’s was reported that seniors in Indiana had a lower stress level than people in other demographics throughout America, the state of today’s economy has taken its toll on the level of stress and anxiety felt by the elderly in the US. Whereas previously, seniors were able to lead more comfortable, virtually stress free lives during retirement while not having to worry about the stresses that come with careers, or with raising your families; financial matters with the economic recession today have taken the stress levels of seniors to an all new level for a whole variety of reasons that seniors may not have had to worry about before, which can also have negative repercussions on their health.

• Interest rates for mortgages may be rising, or homes may be valued at less than the mortgage owing resulting in a greater potential for foreclosure, especially with seniors on a more limited income

• Pension funds and Social Security may take away sources of income for seniors who are already living on limited, fixed incomes

• Interest rates for retirement savings plans and investments may be dropping, resulting in reduced financial standing for the elderly

• Seniors with limited finances may worry about how to pay for their medical bills, including health care, prescriptions, home care and more; which can be difficult when assets and finances available are limited

• Seniors may fear a loss of stability should their spouse pass away

In order to cope with these anxieties and manage stress, seniors should choose activities that are physical in nature to help reduce tension and keep blood pressure low. The elderly can also cope with stress by engaging in activities that they enjoy; simply spending time with family, or doing an activity that puts a smile on their face.
