House Cleaning Safety Tips for Seniors
Light housekeeping usually goes along with the territory when caregiving for a senior. Make yourself familiar with the products in their home and where they are. Never use solutions in unmarked bottles. Use latex gloves when cleaning to protect yourself from germs and abrasive cleaners.
Keep cleaning products away from food, and in a separate cupboard. Keep them at room temperature and avoid storing them in areas near stoves or heaters. If a cleaner is not properly labeled, don’t use it!
Never mix two chemicals-this can produce toxic gas. Take empty containers and rinse them out, placing them in the trash. When working with chemicals, make sure that neither you or the senior eat in an area where there is exposure to toxic materials or other health hazards.
A few more helpful tips for cautious cleaning include-
* Disconnect the vacuum cleaner after using it.
* Don’t operate the vacuum on wet floors.
* Don’t handle or operate electric tools when your hands are wet or when you are standing on wet floors.
* Use a dustpan or broom to clean up broken glass, don’t pick it up with your hands!
